The establishment of Lloyd Signs in 1979 by John and Janis Lloyd was inspired by Janis’ grandfather, C. Earl Welchans. Earl was a nationally recognized showcard artist, illustrator, and gold leaf expert whose talent was also matched by his longevity in both business and in life. His professional sign career, started in 1914, continued until 1990. Amazingly, he remained artistically active and involved until his passing at ninety-nine years of age in 1994. Earl had amassed a large sign crafting library, and his knowledge of layout, letter form, and painting techniques was extensive. With his knowledge, guidance, and encouragement, we decided to leave the security of our art teaching jobs in the public schools system, establish ourselves in Bald Eagle, PA (halfway between Altoona and State College) and continue that tradition until the present.
Prior to the 1990’s, becoming an accomplished sign artist required talent and unending dedication since most every aspect of sign production was done by hand. Mastering sign painting at the onset was a challenging endeavor. However, those first ten years of learning the trade, has given us an intimate understanding of letterforms, spacing, line value, and layout which few current computer-dependent vinyl sign makers seem to possess. Presently, decades later, the vast majority of our signs are 100% painted using a base-coat-clear-coat system. A painted sign done in this manner is sharply focused, extremely durable, resistant to both vandalism and UV light damage, and is reasonably priced, considering its value. We have and do use vinyl in certain instances and presently own a large plotter, computer, and the latest sign-making software to drive it. Considering the clarity, the unlimited color selection, the artistic freedom, and long term durability of two-part paint, we feel it continues to be the best medium when compared to vinyl (in most cases).
Lastly, for those clients who choose us, we’ll make a conscientious effort to produce the best visual advertising value possible. We hope to be contacted by customers who desire exceptional signage designed and fabricated by dedicated, highly-trained sign artists.
